THREE members of a Karate club from Fife have shone in a major competition.

Alana McCann, Claire Penman, and Linzi McCann all traveled to the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, for the British Karate Federation International Karate Championships, under the World Karate Federation banner.

Sensei Stuart Maxwell said: "This event was a fantastic success for Scotland as a whole as there were teams from as far south as Australia and as far north as Norway with many more countries from all over the world competing.

"The Saturday heats were for the seniors and with the Egyptian and Australian World Karate Federation national teams present.

"The students and spectators settled down for an exhibition of karate second to none in this country this year. The Egyptian national Kata team brought the competitors, students and spectators to their feet with their three-man team kata team category performance which was second to none."

On Sunday the three girls compete in the under 14's Kata events.

Alana McCann started the day in the 10 to 11-yr category and unfortunately came up against the eventual winner from England's Eliza Jones in the first round.

Claire Penman was up next in the 12 to 13-yr category.

Stuart said: "Claire dominated the first rounds and was eventually pipped in the semi-finals on a narrow margin of 3-2 by Lauren Tuttie, kenukai England, putting Claire into the bronze medal position.

"It has been a very successfully year for Claire attaining her junior black belt from Sensei Tommy Morris, 8th Dan, who is head of Kobe Osaka International and Presidential Adviser to the World Karate Federation, in may this year.

"She followed this up with first place in the Scottish Karate Championships, in her own style, and by taking bronze in the all styles at the same event.

"The highlight off the day for the club came in the open disabled category. Linzi McCann, who won silver at last year's British Championships, excelled herself this time by taking gold in this prestigious international event.

"Linzi, who is 60 per cent blind, had to take on once again adult competitors and yet again overcame all adversaries with polish and style.

"This has added to her fantastic awards by the Fife Sports Council earlier in the year.

"Credit must go to their Karate coach Sensei Steven Morris, 6th Dan, Kobe Osaka Scotland, who is Scotland's highest ever international medal winner, and who comes through to Fife on a regular bases to conduct courses and gradings for the Fife branch of KOS."

MARTIAL ARTIST KNIFED IN BURGLARY LEAVES HOSPITAL

Strathclyde Police Supt Niven Rennie said: "Two men broke in and made their way upstairs. The lady got out of bed and went into the hall where she saw the men.

"She screamed and this woke her husband who ran to her assistance.

Johannes had grabbed one of the burglars and was first stabbed by his accomplice and again by the other. He suffered several penetration wounds.

His wife fleed into the street screaming for some one to 'phone the police' as the thugs made their getaway as.

* Two youths have appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court charged with attempted murder and assault to severe injury and theft. Both were remanded in custody to appear at a later date.
