NEW EUCHI RYU KARATE CLASS OPENS
By Phil Doherty A NEW Karate class for beginners and experienced martal artists is opening in Gosforth, Newcastle. The Euchi Ryu Karate club adult classes are being held at the Pilates Studio, Back Ivy Road, Gosforth on Saturdays from 2.30pm, starting August 7th. The system is named after its founder Kanbun Euchi who studied Kung Fu in China at the turn of the 20th Century. He taught martial arts in Okinawa in the years that followed. Sensei Tony Brush said: "The training is very intensive. Although its only an hour a week, you put everything into that hour. "Euchi Ryu emphasises a lot of sparring in training, with control and good technique, and I've found that this brings on your reactions and speed very quickly. "However, the aim is not sportive. Instead of winning bouts, our main goal is to learn an effective self-defence in as realistic a way as is possible in safety. "The first thing in a confrontation is to defuse it peacefully, even if you have to swallow your pride, or make a safe exit."Fights are just too dangerous not to do these things. But if you can't avoid physical violence, you have to come out on top. "Your aim is then to land the first strike on target, and for that to finish the fight – but at the same time you have to be ready in case it doesn't turn out like that. "You have to learn to keep going, even when you're exhausted, even when it hurts. "The experience in the dojo is invaluable in such situations." The theory of training in Euchi Ryu is that hard and soft are both important, though for the first few years, the student must learn a hard or external approach in order to quickly gain effective self-defence skills. Tony added: "When I first saw Euchi Ryu, and what impressed me most was the speed. "There were students who had less years' experience than me in the martial arts who were faster and had better reactions than me. Nor was there any compromise in technical skills to gain this speed. I was hooked. "I was extremely fortunate to have as my instructor Master Leo Armstead, who helped me reach my 1st Dan in 2008, after about five years of training." Tony is the editor of the e-magazine World of Martial Arts, which is delivered to subscribers four times a year. New beginners and experienced martial artists are welcome. Adult class (18s+). Venue: Pilates Studio, Back Ivy Road, Gosforth, Saturdays 2:30-3:30pm, starting August 7. The first lesson is free, thereafter £5 per hour, and prior booking is essential. GREAT SUCCESS ![]() (Caption): North fighters Craig Jose and Jamie Bates By Sean O'Connor THE Tyne Theatre fight spectacular was a great success, said the organisers. Held at the Tyne Journal Theatre, Westgate Road, Newcastle, on Friday June 25th, the event involved kickboxing, Muay Thai, MMA and white collar boxing. Promoted by Masac Master it featured some of the top fighters in their fields. "There was great support for the fighters, who came from across the UK to take part in the event. "North fighter Craig Jose's Thai fight was a fantastic fight and all the fighters put up a great display. "Shaun 'boom Boom' Burton's fight against Alexander White was, in most people opinion, the best fight of the night. "Jamie Bates won his bout but it was close and it was a split two to one decision. Because his opponent is 34-years-old with lots of experience, Jamie had to be careful and pick him off. Its was a good fight and a great night. "Thank you to al those who supported the show and helped make it a success." The Masac Gym is open everyday from 5pm to 10pm. Style taught include Ju-Jitsu, Karate and Kick-boxing to adults and children from the age of four upwards. It is based at the Clavering Youth Centre, Clavering Place, Annfield Plain, County Durham.
