Cavendish Bujutsu, contact: adamhosie@yahoo.com; 07832 212023 WEEK-LONG TAI CHI COURSE By Luke Robbins A TAI Chi group are offering a week-long course in the art. Howard Gibbon, Chief Instructor of the East-West Taoist Association, is holding the seminar at Scalby Parish Hall, Scarborough, North Yorkshire. The course is being held between Monday, July 26th and Friday, July 30th. Howard said: "Last year by May we were fuly book so leaving it too late could led to disappointment. "I have to limit the
numbers because I like to make sure everyone gets plenty of help so they benefit
from the unique experience that makes this event so very special.
"For that reason priority is given to those attending the full week and only if all the places are not taken would I consider allowing people to attend for less than the whole week. "According to the feedback from last year and the interest shown already this year that is unlikely. One person has already booked, insisting they pay now to secure their place." The final deadline for enrolment is Saturday, July 10th. Howard added: "This allows me time to see who is attending and make final arrangements to the training schedule. Making sure everyone who attends benefits regardless of their present level. "No matter how long you have been practising our special arts you will learn a great deal more, and most importantly improve your understanding of our very unique style. "There will be other highly skilled instructors in attendance, and this opportunity to train with them should not be missed. " The course starts at 1pm to allow participants to travel to the venue. By Phil Doherty WHEN former cop and Judo instructor Swasie Turner (CORRECT) was mown down by a criminal on powerful motorbike, lost his right leg and six months later his wife to cancer, he considered suicide. But a true fighter, instead he picked up the pieces of his shattered life and decided that he would raise as much money as he could for charities. Now he plans to hike across country in his NHS wheelchair from Solway, Cumbria, to Wallsend, North Tyneside, to raise cash for the Royal Marine Charitable Trust Fund which helps wounded soldiers and bereaved families. Swasie said: "When I lost my leg then lost my childhood sweetheart Marjorie to cancer, both within a few months, I nearly killed myself because I didn’t think I could go on without the love of my life. "I started pushing the wheelchair on roads at first for cancer charities and then I decided to take the chair to the top of a lighthouse - which I did by dragging the wheelchair behind me up the steps - and it just grew from there. "I've done the Great North Run, the London Marathon, I’ve yomped with former Royal Marines and Paras across the Falklands from San Carlos Bay to Port Stanley and lots of other events, including John O’Groats to Lands End."
Swasie trained in Judo for years and was also a boxing coach on Merseyside where he served as a police officer in the fire arms unit. He lost his leg when a criminal used a powerful motorcycle to escape, running him down in the process. After numerous oiperations to try and save his knee, which had been shattered in the impact, he had to have his leg amputated. Now he regularly raises cash for the Royal Marine charity and has been made an honorary member of the regiment and presented with the coveted green beret. He also visits soldiers who have suffered similar injuries to himself and talks to them to help them understand that losing a limb doesn’t mean their life is at an end. Swasie, who comes from the Wirral, Merseyside, will be accompanied by firefighters from Carlisle who served in the Royal Marines, as well as two police officers from Cheshire Police.
He is planning to bring a message from the Mayor of the Wirral Andrew Hodgeson to North Tyneside Mayor Linda Arkley when he finishes the challenge in May. Swasie added: “We are going to follow Hadrian’s wall as much as possible. It will most likely be hard going and will take us around a week to do as its around 95 miles from the start to the finish. I don’t care if I have to crawl, dragging the chair behind me, I will complete it.” Anyone who would
like to donate to Swasie’s fund raising efforts on behalf of the Royal Marines
