(Caption): Some of the students who attended the competition in memory of Scots Guard David Walker, who killed in Afghanistan earlier this year By Don Robinson SCHOOL pupils gathered together from across Scotland to help raise cash for armed force's charity Help For Heroes. The
students took part in the Kobe Osaka Scotland's inter-school
inter-regions championship, held in Fife, Scotland, on June 6th. The event was held in memory of Lance Sgt David Walker
of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards who was killed in Afghanistan
fighting against the Taliban earlier this year. Lance Sgt Walker was a
friend of one of the Kobe Osaka instructors. He left behind a wife and five children. Sensei Stuart Maxwell said: "Thanks to everyone who
worked hart to make the event a success and who donate4d their time and
money. "We raised £520 on the day, which was a great
effort, and brings the total funds raised by Kobe Osaka Scotland for
Help For Heroes to a staggering £3120 since June "The Walker Cup, was given in memory of David, and was awarded to the
most improved kata team at the Championships. "Auchtermuchty Primary School Junior Karate Team was the lucky
recipient, and the cup was presented to Mrs Hogan
on behalf of the school by Lindsay Roy, MP for Glenthrothes, who gave a
speech about the success of Active Schools and the Kobe Osaka group in
their effort to get kids off the streets and into a disciplined sport
across SCotland." The Fife clubs were also celebrating medal success when
two of its girls won gold at the Scottish Karate Governing Body
Scottish Kata Championships held at Meadowbank earlier in June." Anybody interested in enrolling their children in karate lessons in the Howe of Fife area should contact Mr Maxwell at Victoria Hall, Auchtermuchty at 6pm on a Friday night, or at 8pm for the new ladies self protection classes. Emelye O’Brien won the club's only Gold of the day with a clear cut victory in the 10 & 11 Year Old Girls Kumite event. LKA Chief Instructor Nick Heald, 6th Dan, said: "A superb showing, of which everyone within the LKA can be proud. "Ashley Scott was our most successful competitor of the day, taking medals in all four events she entered. She was beaten narrowly to the Female Kumite title by England Team-mate Zoe Campbell and followed this up with Third Place in the Female Kata event too. "She was also part of the LKA Team kata which took Silver medal position behind Manchester University, coached by our regular Grading Examiner, Sensei Garry Harford. "With both teams performing Unsu, the Manchester Team - who have all individually been National Kata Champions - pipped us to the the title. "Finally, in a repeat of last years Female Team Kumite Final, we were again narrowly beaten 2-1 by Halewood. However, despite the disappointment of not collecting Gold, Ashley should be very proud of her all-round performance." David Wright took a very creditable Silver in the Senior Male Kata event where he was beaten by this Years KUGB Grand Champion, John James Bruce of Sendai Kushiro. Holly Dickinson and Jordon Probst also both took Silver medals in their respective Kumite events and whilst both fought very well, they were both beaten by physically bigger opponents. Sensei Heald added: "Although we only won the one event, it is fair to say that the general standard of the LKA Competitors over all events was excellent. "As we had medallists in Boys and Girls events, Junior Men and Junior Womens events and Senior Men and Senior Womens events, it certainly says a lot about the LKA’s strength in depth and we can be confident that we are heading in the right direction. "Matt Price and Tom Little also put on a very entertaining Demonstration for the crowd during the evenings finals showing a wide and spectacular variation in technique. The full list of our 39 Competitors was: Ashley Scott, Daryn Hobden, Zoe Starr, David Wright, Nick Smith, Natasha Balyckyi, Jordon Probst, Ryan Tucker, Mel Finlay, Brian Lister, Joe Hart, Stephen Brown, James Brown, Holly Dickinson, Sam Goulden, Tom Little, Josie Fishkin, Oliver Deane, Dan Martin, Ronan Cain, Abi Chapman, Hayden Steele,Tom Mitchell, Jed Dickinson, Andrew Cryer, Andy Deane, Pat Cryer, Kate Lister, Jamie Horwell, Callam Payne, Emelye O’Brien, Adam Banks, Sam Mitchell, Connor Payne, James Williams, David Lister, Jude O’Brien, Joe Bulmer and Kieran Tucker

"Each and every member of the Squad performed at a very high standard. "Ethan Armstrong also making his debut just missed out on a semi-final place as did the Parson brothers Eliot and Ethan who both did very well in the elimination rounds of both kata and kumite. "Charlie Cuddy was beaten in the first round of the kumite but made up for it in the Kata event just missing out on a place in the finals after going over on his ankle and carrying on in extreme pain. "David Guilfoyle also made debut at the Nationals in the Senior men event. David came up against far more experienced competitors than himself in both the Kata and Kumite events. Well done david i'm sure you will learn from the experience. "Arron Parmar was making first appearance in competition since returning to the club and made steady progress through the eliminations but was beaten in the latter stages of the elimination rounds. "James Humphries also put in a good effort but again was baten in the early stage of his catagory. "Michale Gale came back to the mat in the kumite event for the first time in 2 years. He was very impressive in fighting but was retired by the medical team after slipping when attacking and recieving a groin injury. "The injury did not prevent Michale from achieving his goal in the Kata event. His performance in Kata eliminations was outstanding. "In the Kata finals Michale performed kata Unsu, which he has been working for the last few weeks, his performance proved to be to good for his other three opponents. Michael won the kata event with the highest points and was awarded National Childrens Kata Champion. "Harry Cuddy, a National Squad member, entered both Kata and Kumite events. He got through three rounds of the Kata elinations and was beaten in the next. this in itself was an achievement for him and he was very pleased with himself. "Next was the kumite eliminations where he went for all his opponents, constantly attacking. "In the finals he came against his fellow National Squad member. The final was a tight affair, but Harry was always on the attack with a variation of leg sweeps and punching techniques. "After getting the first half point and with no further score, the match was awarded to him. Harry Cuddy is now National Junior Male Kumite Champion. "All in all every member of the Leeds Shotokan Karate Squad performed excellently, well done everyone.
