MARTIAL News would like to welcome Chris Leben. Chris was one of the first contestants on The Ultimate Fighter series where he fought Jason Thacker in the final and then went on to fight for the UFC since 2005. He is competing in UFC 116 being held at the MSG Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada on July 3rd. Martial News: Hello Chris Leben, hope you are keeping well Chris Leben: Hello Phil, I'm well thank you MN: Do you have any pre-fight superstitions? CL: I guess having a tattoo? I have so many now that getting ink is something I do around every camp. When I fought Bisping I had work down way too close to the fight and I knew about it when I was training. Not the brightest move. MN: What is your usual diet on fight day? CL: The weight-cut is over so I can get better, but to avoid stomach cramps you can’t go down to the donut store and just fill your face. I enjoy a good sized meal though. MN: Who is the one guy you look up to most in the UFC? CL: Anyone who comes to fight and brings it. That’s the type of fighter I am, that the type of fighters I like to watch and the type I want to fight. That’s why I took this fight at UFC 116 on two week’s notice, Akiyama comes to fight man. MN: What do you do after the fight to celebrate victory? CL: Not like I used to! I had problems when I would party way too hard after fights, and sometimes not even after fights. It was a problem and was affecting my career and my relationships so I cooled it down. MN: How important is mental strength and sheer refusal to get beat during a fight? CL: That’s my thing. You can be beating my ass, a mile ahead of points but I don’t care. If know that when I catch you, you are in deep shit bro. No matter how bad it looks for me, I am still trying to knock the guy flat out. And a lot of times I do that. What do you need to hear? I punch people in the face and put them to sleep. MN: Did you always know you wanted to be a fighter? CL: I just like to fight, to compete. I mean, I am not like a stripper and paying my way through college. I wanna do this because it is who I am, it is what I am supposed to do. Clearly, there’s gotta be something wrong with me to want to do this, all fighters are a little nuts. MN: Thank you Chris Leben... CL: Thank you Martial News JUNE EDITION - SUBSCRIBE FOR FREE
