MMA legend Frank Shamrock has retired from the cage after a long career at the top of his game. Frank, whose real name is rank Alisio Juarez III, made the announcement at Strikeforce on Saturday, June 26th at the HP Pavilion, San Jose, California, US. He said on his blog: "Hey everyone, thanks for being there for all these years. Last night, I retired from MMA and it was the hardest thing I ever had to do. "I was shocked to see my
record and a tribute in the program of the
event and to learn that I fought nine
times in 1995! Shamrock's career saw him crown the first ever UFC light-heavyweight champion, which at the time was classed as a middleweight. He was also Strikeforce's first middleweight champ, won the title at King of the Pancrase and was WEC first heavyweight champion. His records stand at 23-10-2. MMA FIGHTER RIPPED HEART OUT OF TRAINING PARTNER - POLICE CLAIM
By Darren
Currah Police Sgt Elwood Lee, of the Del Norte Police Department, told the court that Wyatt had admitted to cooking parts of Powell because he believed he was still alive. He threw other body bits into the fire, its claimed. Wyatt had allegedly cut an 18 inch hole in Powell's chest to access his heart while he was still living, according to an autopsy report. He had admitted, allegedly, to a police officer that he and his friends had been drinking hallucinogenic mushroom tea before the murder. Wyatt's former girlfriend Billy Jo Bailey - who also at the scene - said she noticed his behaviour change after drinking the tea. His defence attorney, James Fallman, told the court that his client had been having a psychotic episode at the time of the attack because of the mushrooms. He argued that because of the episode he had no control of his actions But with Wyatt facing a first degree murder charge - which relies on premeditation - the prosecution argued removing Powell's heart, tongue and face took time enough to prove intent with malice aforethought. He has also been charged with torture, because he removed Powell's heart while was still alive its alleged, and aggravated mayhem. ********************************************************************* TWO KOREAS PREPARE FOR WAR - WORLD FRIENDS KOREA USES TAEKWONDO FOR PEACE WITH hostilities between North and South Korea on the verge of breaking out at any moment, one group plans to use martial arts to promote peace. World Friends Korea (WFC) has revealed it wants to promote friendship across the third world by using Taekwondo as a goodwill ambassador. The organisation is similar in outlook with the American Peace Corps and is run by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). KOICA said in a report to the South Korean government that the plan is in step with growing interest in Korean culture from third world countries. They hoped the proposal would help strengthen ties between Korea and the un-developed world and deepen cultural understanding. The plan would see Taekwondo instructors go to the countries in Africa and Asia and teach younger generations the sport. The WFC would also allow senior citizens a chance to join the scheme if they were interested in goodwill activities overseas The South Korean government has already launched ten projects aimed at rebranding the country and becoming a more fully-fledged member of the international community. Korea already has the second highest number of overseas volunteers 2500 earmarked this year by the government. This year it is expected to shoot up past the 3000 mark. US SOLDIERS BATTLE IT OUT WITH MMA
By Darren Currah AMERICAN soldiers held an mma fight night in a US base in southern Iraq. More than 1000 US servicemen and women throng the show at Contingency Operating Base Adder. Called Friday Night Fights, the event took place in a makeshift boxing ring and saw soldiers, special forces and private contractors battle it out. The fighters had to compete under US Army Modern Army Combat rules. The sport of mma is spreading fast across American army bases all over the world. Col. Peter Newell, 4th Brigade, Army 1st Division, said regulated fights were good for keeping up "that warrior spirit". "I know it's near-beer," but it doesn't get much better than this!" Newell told the raucous crowd, promising to make fight nights a monthly event. "Eight bouts tonight, 16 the next time." The US military is supportive of mma in the service because with the change in US strategy in Iraq and the army role changing to an assist and advice state as Iraqi forces take the lead in fighting the insurgency. Last month was the first that no American soldiers haven't died since the invasion almost seven years ago. The US plans to leave at the end of next year. This has seen large numbers of Iraq veterans holed up in bases across the Middle East country and the sport is seen as a release valve for the soldiers used to dealing with danger on a day-to-day basis. The base has 30 regular fighters training at the COB Adder fight club. |
