MMA FIGHTER'S DEATH WILL NOT SEE SPORT MADE ILLEGAL

THE death of an American MMA fighter will not see the sport's banned in Ontario, officials have said.

Salvador Flamenco died in a sparring season in Vancouver, Washington, United States. According to reports he died from a blunt head trauma.

"At this point, I don't think it will be an issue here," Ontario athletics commissioner Ken Hayashi told the Citizen Monday.

Flamenco had traveled to the man's house to train with him in basement. During a session he began complaining of dizziness, began vomiting and was then taken to hospital.

According to reports he died in hospital shortly after arrival.

The US coroners office ruled that Flamenco's death was homicide and police have launched an investigation.

According to Canadian authorities in Ontario - which has recently legalised the sport - Flamenco's death should why it was important to regulate the sport.

Since it was legalise in the province, the sport has been under attack by opponents who want it banned again.

Under the rules governing the sport in Ontario each fighter must undergo tests to check the head, brain, eyes and heart before they compete. This is to make sure there are no brain bleeds, heart conditions or other medical conditions which could threaten the life of a fighter.

However, the circumstances surrounding the death of Flamenco are not covered by the law as it does not cover training.

Since the sport was regulated in 2001 there have been 14 sanctioned fight shows in the province.
