TRIBUTES FOR GOJU RYU INSTRUCTOR JOHN LAMBERT
By Darren Currah TRIBUTES have been paid to Sensei John Lambert who died peacefully after a long fight against illness. The 5th Dan was the head of the Scottish Goju Ryu Karate Association and was highly respected throughout the martial arts community. He passed aged 54 at his home in Glenrothes on Monday, June 28th after a courageous fight against cancer. He leaves behind his wife Sandra, son Iain and daughter Pauline and son-in-law Ian.Kenny Morrison, of the SGKA , said in a tribute on the association website: "Sensei John Lamber was my instructor for the last 26-years throughout my Goju training. He was an inspiration to me not only in karate but also in life. "I will never forget his kindness towards me and my family and also the great inner strength he showed throughout his long fight against cancer, always thinking of others and how they would cope in his absence. "I, like so many others, will miss you Sensei, you were one of my dearest friends." Sensei Lambert studied Goju Ryu Karate for nearly 40 years and had, in that time, taught thousands of students in the Okinawan system. He started training in 1973 under Senseis James Johnstone and Jim Flannigan at the Fife Institute, where his Dojo remains to this day. He trained with Master Sensei Morio Higaonna and was made Chief Instructor of the International Okinawan Goju Karate Federation and formed the SGKA. He later became president of the IOGKF. His brother Dave Lambert was chief instructor of the IOGKF Australia. At the time they were the only two family members to head Goju associations in two countries at the end side of the world to each other. His brother passed away in 2000. His nephew - also called David - now runs the Dojo in New South Wales, Australia. He was also involved in the Olympian program and travelled the world mentoring and coaching with local sportsman from the Fife area.

THREE THAI FIGHTERS SHOW A LOT OF HEART THREE members of the Jai Freestyle Martial Arts and Fitness Academy won accolades at the Koa Loi Thai boxing show. George Brent and Tom Griffin both defeated their oppoents in their bouts at the event held at the Manhattan Club, Harrogate on 16th May. Jon Walker's fight - although he narrowly lost - was deemed by the judges to be the bout of the night. It took Brent, from Keighley, three ferocious rounds to finally nail his opponent in the third round in the five round match. Griffin, of Skipton, won on points. Head coach Robin Shepherd said: "I am so
proud of all the fighters. They train like professionals and are in the
gym pushing themselves to the limit four or five times a week." The Jai Freestyle Martial Arts and Fitness Academy, Eastburn, was founded by Robin Shepherd in March 2004. Robin has trained under Kru Pierre Mahon in Harrogate and Apidej Sit-Hirun, the Muay Thai Grand Master, in Thailand. The Academy was named Jai Freestyle - Jai being the Thai word for Heart, which is the symbol within the Company logo. Robin said: "The Company name therefore represents
the Academy’s philosophy of encouraging its students to put
their heart and sole into their chosen sport. "Having gone from strength to strength over the past four years, the Academy now offers an extensive range of martial arts and fitness classes. For more information phone: 07949 502185 or email: jaifreestyle1@aol.com or visit: www.jaifreestyle.co.uk

the "Instructors included: Fay Goodman, Nanadan Renshi, BKA; Peter West, Nanadan Renshi, BKA, John Honisz-Greens, Godan, ZNKR; and guest instructor Neil Kemp. "The team work of Fay and Peter sensei, with John supporting was a very valuable aspect of this event, having our seniors demonstrate what Oshita-Ha body and sword work should be to consolidate and strengthen our look and feel of Muso Jikiden Eishen Ryu in "More importantly, the idea of the levels one, two and three of the technique; with one, being the sword work and basic mechanics of the technique level two the body work and advanced foot work, and level three adding the polish, flavour etc. "For this weekend we focused mostly on level one and a little bit of level two. So that the group goal should be to all understand and do the same level 1 waza to legitimise our Ha since we cannot present a united effort if we are all doing different things and are unsure of what the basics are. "We were also privileged to see the contrast between Pete West Sensei and Neil Kemp Sensei to see the differences between Oshita-Ha and Iwata-Ha, both good strong MJER schools with many more similarities that there are differences. "Although Peter and Neil have not trained together in over 10 Years it was amazing to see two senior instructors of different Ha’s starting and ending in unison and performing with the same spirit and feel of their techniques. As John took as through the main teaching points from Oshita-ha and how we should be using our body to produce good technique.
