By Phil Doherty THE mother of Karate Instructor Chris Brown - shot dead by Moat - paid tribute to him. Raoul Moat, 37, killed Chris with a shotgun after he bravely went outside to confront the killer who had just shot Samantha Stobbart - Moat's ex-partner - through a living room window. Moat later blinded PC David Rathband, 42, by blasting him in the face as he sat in his police car at East Denton, Newcastle. He shot himself after being surrounded by armed officers in Rothbury, Northumberland.
Sally Brown, in a statement from Northumbria
Police, said: "Christopher was the sort of person who was a 'live
wire' and never sat still. "He believed in living life to the full and having
fun. "He would 'do my head in' how he never sat still.
He
joked about everything and lived for the moment. "He found mental and physical strength and friends in karate. He passed this on to the people he taught." The family also criticised Northumbria Police for not warning Chris and Samantha - who were dating - they had a letter from Durham Prison saying Moat had threatened to hurt Samantha, who was the mother to his child.
Chris, 29, was originally from Slough and had moved to the North East six months prior to his death on Satyrday, July 3rd. He had only started seeing Samantha after meeting her the martial arts class where he taught. The instructor was a member of the Go Kan Ryu Karate organisation had started a new job in Gateshead teaching the system. The system is a mixture of Shotokan Karate and Goju Ryu and was founded in Australia in 1984 by Kancho Robert Sullivan. It has around 50,000 members across Australia, USA, New Zealand and Great Britain. He loved to dance and enjoyed socialising with his friends. NEWS FLASH+++NEWS FLASH+++NEWS FLASH+++NEWS FLAS MOAT TRAPPED BY POLICE IN TOWN ![]() ![]() (Caption): Police are hunting Raoul Thomas Moat who is alleged to have shot ex-partner Samantha Stobbart, her boyfriend Chris Brown and police officer David Rathband... By Sean O'Connor A MAN wanted for killing a karate instructor and the shootng of a former partner and a cop has been surrounded by police tonight. Britain's most wanted Raoul Moat, 37, is sitting with a shotgun to his throat with armed officers and snipers around him near the riverside in Rothbury, Northumberland. The fugitive, who has been on the run since last Saturday, was spotted around 7.30pm on Friday. Police were quickly on the scene - with two cop cars crashing into each other in their haste to get to Moat - and were last night laying a cable to Moat who is sitting in view of nearby houses to speak to him People in the village have been told to stay indoors and lock them. Some residents have been trapped in their homes nearby to where Moat is in his stand-off with officers. The tense situation is now quickly turning in to a negotiation phase where police will attempt to persuade Moat to end this peacefully. Its is believed a friend of Moat's has been brought into the police cordon to talk to him He has been on the run since his ex-girlfriend, her new partner - who was killed - and a police officer were shot on Tyneside at the weekend. Moat is alleged to have written a 40-page letter which chillingly told how he had executed Karate instructor Chris Brown, 29, who had confronted him in the street after he shot his former partner Samantha, 22, through a living room window. After gunning Chris down, its claimed the letter said Moat had shot him in the head on Saturday 4th. The next day he is alleged to have shot PC David Rathband, 42, in the face as he sat in his police car at East Denton, Newcastle. Northumbria Police have imposed a 10-mile (16km) exclusion zone above the town. The scene is close to where the Lexus, believed to have been driven by Moat, was found on Tuesday. Three mobile phones used by Moat were recovered by police on Thursday. One was handed in by a member of the public in Rothbury and two were found by police. ********************************************************************By

Police were alerted that Moat could be in Rothbury after resident spotted an abandoned car the police believed Moat was travelling in. Scores of heavily armed police officers swarmed into the village, ordering people to go indoors and lock them on Tuesday. Two men, first said to be hostages, but later arrested for conspiracy to commit murder, were found walking along a road near Rothbury. By Wednesday the search for the suspected was widening out after a tent was found in a field outside of the village. Another letter said to be addressed to Samantha was found at the campsite. Detective Chief Superintendent Neil Adamson, in charge of the operation, said he believed that Moat was in the area, but admitted he could have fled. Its believed that Moat may be armed with two shotguns and has ammunition for them. Police offered a £10,000 reward for information that leads to his detention. Moat, was was released from Durham Prison last week after serving a sentence for violence against a family member. The prison warned police by letter that they thought he may harm Samantha on release after she left him while he as in prison. It said she had wrote on her Facebook account that she was seeing a police officer because she was scared of his violence and wanted him to stay away from her. But instead she had been dating Karate instructor Chris Brown who she met while learning the martial art at a Go Kan Ryu dojo in the North East. Chris had only been in the region for a few months, having moved from his native Slough, Berks, to take up a job in Karate. Its has been reported that he had threatened to kill Samantha in the past and had a history of domestic violence against her. Samantha has a daughter aged 19-months to Moat. She was critically injured in the shooting but has steadily made progress since.![]() PC Rathband, who was shot in the face, asked colleagues to release a picture of his horrific injuries so the public could see what Moat is alleged to have done. In a rambling letter Moat is said to have "declared war " on the police and said he wasn't looking to hurt anyone but police officers. Moat is said to know the Rothbury and surrounding areas well after a relationship with a Rothbury girl some years ago. The woman, Yvette foreman, 35, used to camp out with Moat in the area and that he had got to know the area well. The had been girl and boyfiend in their 20's, and she described him at the time as a "lovely lad" and a practical joker who was "daft as a brush". On Tuesday she said, because of Moat's knowledge of the area, it could take police a while to find him in the dense wooded Cheviot Hills.
