CONDIT FACES GSP AFTER REPLACING DIAZ

By Martial News Reporter

CARLOS Condit has been selected to replace Nicky Diaz for the fight against Georges St Pierre.

Condit was chosen after Diaz was dropped by Danas white after he failed to turn up for scheduled media events.

Dana, President of the UFC, said of Nicky's failure to show up: "He looked me right in my face and lied to me and told me he'd do the promotional commitments.

"Nick Diaz can't handle the pressure of a major main event...that's what I think."

Diaz has not only upset White, his trainer and friend Cesar Gracie said he had no sympathy for him after his no show at two promos.

He told MMAWeekly.com: "I was pretty pissed off when I first heard about this, obviously for our team, and personally it’s something I’ve worked for, for so many years.

"Bringing this kid from
Stockton when he was 16 and making him this world class fighter, and for him at this moment to do something this stupid, and not show up for something he was supposed to show up to, it’s very frustrating to me to say the least."

UFC 137 is taking place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas on October 29th.

Condit was originally due to fight BJ Penn as a co-headline fight. With that match up now scrapped, Penn is in talks with the UFC for a possible match up on a future event.

Although Diaz has been dropped by the fight show, White did not rule out his return in the future.

UFC WILL INSURE FIGHTERS FOR ACCIDENTS IN TRAINING

By Phil Doherty

THE UFC has announced that all its fighters will be insured against injury while training as well as during fights.

At present the UFC carries insurance for fighters who are injured in bouts on the shows but from the start of this month all fighters will now be insured while they train.

Before this move by the world's biggest fight unit, fighters who were injured during training had to pasy for their own medical bills and lrgal costs.

This meant that any fighter injured while training not only had the risk of large medical bills but also missed out on fight purses.

UFC President Dana White said: "This is a big milestone in the company.

"It's a big day not only for this company but for combat sports in general. It's never been done ... It's a proud moment for us."

The insurance covers fighters from the UFC and Strikeforce up to $50,000 (£31,000) a year regardless where they are based.

UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta told a media conference that fighters attending a meeting had applauded the news when told.

Although the fighters are under contract to the UFC's parent company Zuffa, they are considered to be independent contractors had previously had to cover their own insurance cover or do without.

Fertitta said that the new UFC insurance... "will cover any kind of accident that could prevent them from fighting and making their purse.

"As you can imagine when you walk into an insurance company and say "Yeah, we want to get full coverage for 400 Ultimate Fighters, that includes all of their training and everything else in their life,' they pretty much slam the door on you pretty quick."

It took three years of negotiations for Zuffa to clinch the insurance deal, which succeeded because there was a cap on the amount payable by the insurance sector.

Lawrence Epstein, UFC general counsel, said the cap had been chosen after it had studied the type of injuries sustained by fighters on its shows.

KICKBOXER CROWNED WORLD MISS UNIVERSITY

By Luke Robbins

KICKBOXER Katie Farr has proved a big hit after being crowned World Miss University at a contest held in South Korea.

Katie, 24, who studies at Leeds University, has already won Miss Leeds and came in the top twenty in last year's Miss England contest.

She said: "Before doing Miss England I thought that beauty contests were all about daft proclamations about 'world peace' and all the rest of it.

"But when I looked into entering the competition I realised what a fantastic opportunity it would be, especially in terms of my charity work.

"I did some aid work in South Africa before going to university and it was then I decided it was what I really wanted to do as a career.

"After uni, I thought about how I would make my way into aid work but the competition was really fierce.

"Then someone suggested Miss England and I discovered it would be a really good thing for me to do.

"I learnt that you have to be more than just a pretty face to enter.

"All of the girls that were in it had done lots of interesting things on their CVs and Miss England was a great platform on which to promote all the things that I believed in."

The kickboxer not only packs a powerful punch she also got lots of grey muscle having an IQ of over 140.

It was on display at the beauty competition in Seoul when she beat 40 other hopefuls to the crown.

The contestants were subjected to a two week assessment where they had to show their debating skills, individual talents, learn how to produce local Koraen food, deliver coal to poor Koreans and feed the homeless.

TOTAL COMBAT 39 - FIGHT REPORT AND RESULTS

EXCLUSIVE by Dave Brown, MMA Reporter

TOTAL Combat 39 has held up to its promise of being an explosive night of exciting fights.

The event was held at the  Spennymoor Leisure Centre on Saturday, March 12th.

There was two British Titles and a European Title up for grabs.

Dave Brown, Martial News MMA reporter, takes us through the main fights blow bt blow.

Caglar vs Hogarth
For me this was the fight of the night due to the technical quality display by both fighters.

It started off with Hogarth throwing a good solid jab rocking Onour's head back but just coming off winning a gold medal in jiu- jitsu Onour did as expected and took his opponent to the mat.

Hogarth recovered well to his feet only to be slammed back down and found himself in a arm bar which he reversed followed by some fantastic ground skills from both fighters until the end of round one.

Round two saw both fighters come out throwing punches. The fight went to the ground then after a scramble to their feet Caglar pounced off the cage into a flying armbar, held in tight Hogarth slammed him to the mat hoping to free himself, they then scrambled up again for Caglar to throw a heavy left to take the fight to the ground where it was Hogarth who took control with a tight armbar that to everyone's amazement in the venue he reversed and faught on until the end of the round.

After the deliberation of the officials they rightly so decided to go to a third and final round.

This round found them go pretty much straight to the ground where the Jiu -jitsu was second to none, arm bar attempts to fantastic heel hooks with reversals to match, until Caglar locked in a tight armbar on a shattered Hogarth to win the Semi pro title.

Bilton vs Dobson

This was announced fight of the night and voted so by many in the venue for the sheer battle these two warriors showed in the arena.

Straight from the off the pair were entangled in a flurry of hands with Bilton catching one hard on the chin and falling like a tombstone stiff to the mat, as fast as he hit it he was back up taking Dobson to the mat showing a solid chin and strong will. The round played out with some huge take downs from Bilton and heel hook attempts until the bell.

Round two saw Bilton looking the stronger and fitter when trading hands and kicks. Again a battle of relentless skill against the cage side both fighters showing strong chins but Bilton found Dobsons neck and wrapped in tight as they went to the ground Dobson was forced to tap via a strong Guillotine choke to give Bilton the win and the welter weight title belt.

Ray vs Parker

This pro European title bout had it all, a huge crowd following, powerful fighters and a fantastic ending.

The fight started with two powerful fighters throwing strong hands and heavy kicks by both fighters, Ray fired out of nowhere a super man punch to stun Parker followed with a good take down where Parker took over with some good ground and pound then reversed by Ray to catch Parker’s arm across his throat working him into an extremely tight arm triangle to put parker to sleep giving the win and title belt to Steven Ray.

After the medics tended to Davy Parker he showed the most fantastic display of sportsmanship I have seen in this sport, with a hostile crowd booing Ray as his arm was raised, Parker congratulated his opponent by picking him above the small crowd in the ring to show the winner then carried on to put the European belt around the waist of Steven ray.

Hobbs vs Renon

With Renon travelling hours up from Plymouth for this fight he was met with a force he was not expecting, Hobbs came out with accurate powerful shots expected from a Pro MMA fighter, whereas the flashy shaoulin style of Renon's spinning kicks and hands had little to no effect on Hobbs, which showed as Hobbs KO'd Renon with a huge right in 41 seconds of round one.

Redfern vs Barker
Redfern came out looking the stronger and more confident as he threw kicks and hands to make barker clinch where he received heavy knees. As they break Barker goes to the ground where Redfern followed raining down heavy elbows and hands cutting the head of Barker.

Redfern continues the punishment until the referee steps in to declare Redfern the winner by TKO.

Grant vs Williams

This was an epic fight with Grant newly fighting out of the wolflair in Liverpool and Williams from the predators in Manchester it was going to be a war of rival city's to start with.

Both fighters came out with good quick and strong strikes, neither fighter was backing off the gas or shying away from the challenge, Grant was throwing big hooks catching some and good knees from the clinch, while Williams had plenty to throw back taking Grant to the ground multiple times and big hooks of his own. Showing good ground skills with an attempted triangle tight in but reversed by Grant. They traded hands and kicks all the way to the bell.

Round two saw Grant coming out the stronger, pushing more and taking it to the ground, after a short roll Grant finds the back of Williams and manages to take his neck to force Williams to tap out giving Grant a well deserved win.

Close vs Desborough

Headline fight of the night was between two exciting fighters to watch, the aptly named Tim the 'whirlwind' close and Jordan Desborough, Close always a fast paced fighter came out swinging as ever eager to to punish his opponent by throwing a straight right dropping Desborough and getting him into a guillotine early on, but Desborough had other ideas as he pulled out to survive and fight on. Desborough worked round to Closes back to gain control with a body triangle giving him shots from all directions until the end of round.

In the second round Close was pushed up against the cage where he rained down fast elbows and hands. The fight took to the ground with close on the bottom taking blows in full mount until he makes a fantastic cage reversal to pull full guard. He postures up to give some light but quick fore arm strikes to finninsh the round on the ground.

The final round was dominated by Desborough on the ground, starting by shooting in to getting reversed to his back he takes some strikes where he reversed and was caught in a guillotine. After pulling out the third round was his for the taking as he took a tired Close's back giving him strike after strike until the final bell came.

The judges all agreed to give the win to Desborough with two rounds to one.
